A Vision For Better Transportation: It’s Official

We’re excited to share breaking news! Today, representatives of our diverse coalition – including community and youth groups, labor unions, and elected officials from across Fresno County – filed a notice of intention to begin gathering voter signatures to qualify the people’s transportation improvement measure for the November 2026 ballot. This is a pivotal moment in our years-long movement to ensure the next iteration of our local transportation half-cent sales tax prioritizes fixing our local roads and improving public transit options that meet the needs of everyone.

Over the next several weeks, we plan to gather 35,000 signatures from Fresno County voters to qualify the measure for the ballot, ensuring decision-making remains in the hands of the people.

Veronica Garibay, Co-Director, Leadership Counsel for Justice and Accountability

“Over the last year, thousands of Fresno County residents came together to shape a vision for a better transportation future that aligns our tax dollars with how people actually move through their daily lives,” said Leadership Counsel for Justice and Accountability Co-Director Veronica Garibay. “We are moving forward together with a plan to use local funding to fix what matters most, fixing local roads first, improving transit, creating good jobs now and for future generations, without raising taxes.”

This transportation improvement measure reflects the vision and priorities that YOU and thousands of our neighbors across Fresno County shared over the past year – repairing local streets, enhancing safety, and making transportation options more accessible for everyone. The people’s plan is estimated to generate $7.4 billion over 30 years and will:

  • Make fixing and improving local streets and potholes the top priority. 65% of the funds (an estimated $4.8 billion) will go directly to fix local streets and roads, and invest in what our neighborhoods need most, including: sidewalks, crosswalks, curb and gutter, streetlights, bike lanes, and Safe Routes to Schools—so children, seniors, and people with disabilities can move safely through their communities.
  • 25% of the funds ($1.85 billion) will go toward improving our public transit services – better connecting residents to jobs, schools, doctor appointments, grocery stores, and other essential services.
  • 5% of the funds ($370 million) will go to projects that provide congestion relief and better connections between cities and towns.
  • 4% of the funds ($296 million) will enable new technologies, invest in zero-emission infrastructure, and increase access to new destinations.
  • Finally, 1% of the funds ($74 million) will ensure transparent spending, strong citizen oversight, annual audits, and a public database tracking every dollar and project.

Jerry Dyer, Fresno Mayor

“By maintaining a sales tax for transportation, Fresno County can fix local roads, protect taxpayers, and build a transportation system that works for everyone—now and in the future,” said Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer. “For nearly four decades, local transportation sales tax funds have delivered real results, but our work is far from over, and without a reliable local funding source, the city of Fresno and other communities in Fresno County will continue to fall further behind.”

THANK YOU for helping make this moment possible. In the months ahead, we’ll be counting on each of you to help make this vision real and win the support of a majority of Fresno County voters.
